What is the Cyber Essentials Scheme?
1 in 4 businesses reported a cyber breach or attack in the past 12 months - that’s quite a scary figure when you consider the potential data breach and what that could mean with the introduction of the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) coming into effect in May 2018 with fines up to €20 million.
Cyber Essentials will soon be an essential part of GDPR compliance. The industry supported scheme that is backed by the government was developed to help organisations protect themselves against cyber-attacks. It is believed that when the key areas of the scheme are addressed, around 80% of cyber-attacks can be prevented.
The scheme focuses on the following 5 key areas:
Secure setup of systems to reduce unnecessary cyber vulnerabilities.
Boundary Firewalls and Internet gateways
Basic level protection that prevents unauthorised access to your system.
Access Controls and Administrative Privilege Management
Restricting and preventing misuse of privileged accounts.
Ensuring that software on computers and devices is up to date to resist low-level cyber-attacks.
Protection against an extensive range of malware, allowing removal of any malware.
