Our Commitment to a Net Zero Future
The next decade is critical. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns of the severe consequences of failing to prevent global warming exceeding 1.5°C. To To limit the increase in global average temperatures to 1.5°C, emissions need to halve by 2030 and drop to net zero by the middle of the century for the best chance of avoiding the worst impacts of climate change.
At Total Group, we recognise the scale of the transition needed and the challenges climate change presents for governments, businesses, and civil society alike.
We believe we must take a proactive role in ensuring that our operations – and those of the businesses we work with – significantly contribute to carbon reduction and long-term sustainability.
Our Pathway to Net Zero by 2025
In 2019, Total Group published our Net Zero Emissions Pathway, setting out a bold and measurable goal: to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by the end of 2025.
Now in 2025, we are proud to be in the final stages of delivering on this commitment. Our operational infrastructure, supplier network, and internal policies are all aligned with our Net Zero ambition, and we remain firmly on track to complete our transition within this calendar year.
Working in partnership with Low Carbon Workspace, we designed and built our headquarters around a single guiding principle:
“If we can measure it, we can manage it - and if we can manage it, we can reduce it.”
Key Steps We Have Taken
- Our premises are designed to be self-sufficient, utility-independent sites. While connected to the mains, by summer 2025 we will become net energy generators, supplying clean electricity back to the national grid.
- We source our water from boreholes and recycle it on-site through our own treatment systems.
- We generate electricity via solar panels.
- Heating is provided using Ground Source and Air Source systems.
- We process all sewage using packed treatment plants on-site.
- Rain and surface water from our roofs is treated and reused through Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS), which also serve as wildlife habitats.
- Every element of our buildings – from LED lighting to staff showers – is designed with energy efficiency in mind.
- All power systems (lights, sockets) are internet-connected, allowing centralised control, smart metering, and automated power-down schedules when systems are not in use.
- Since 2020, all new vehicles in our fleet have been fully electric, with fast EV chargers provided on-site for staff.
- We promote ethical suppliers and products that align with our vision for sustainability.
- We support our customers and suppliers in their own environmental efforts, including understanding the carbon footprint of their digital systems.
- We actively plant trees and grasslands to offset any remaining emissions.
Sharing Our Progress & Impact
At Total Group, we understand that environmental transformation is not just a business goal – it’s a shared responsibility.
We share our strategy, infrastructure, and operational learnings to help businesses reduce the carbon footprint of their digital systems and supply chains. Through collaboration with ethical suppliers and environmentally conscious clients, we aim to amplify sustainable impact across the sectors we serve.
Our mission is not only to secure digital futures – but to ensure a sustainable physical future too.
We’re approaching the final stages of our Net Zero 2025 goal, but our commitment doesn’t end there. As our infrastructure, partnerships, and operations evolve, we’ll continue to lead with measurable action and practical insight, helping shape a lower-carbon future for our sector and those we work with.
