Google’s $500bn day: what it means for how your business uses AI

On Thursday 29 October 2026, shares in Alphabet, the parent company of Google, fell by around 13%. It was the company’s worst day since it listed in 2004, and it wiped roughly $500 billion off its market value. Only one US company has ever lost more in a single day: Nvidia, which lost $593 billion in January 2025.

The cause was not a scandal or an outage. It was AI.

What happened

  • Search is slowing. Google’s search revenue grew 12% to about $63 billion, short of the roughly $65 billion analysts expected. Many analysts link this to people asking AI chatbots and agents instead of searching.
  • AI is expensive. Alphabet is spending record sums on AI, with around $205 billion of investment expected this year. Its free cash flow swung to a loss of about $9 billion in the quarter.
  • AI is also growing fast. Google Cloud revenue more than doubled to about $31 billion, and the Gemini app passed one billion users.

In other words, AI is now big enough to shake the most successful search business in history, in both directions at once.

What this means for UK businesses

1. The way customers find you is changing

If fewer people search and more people ask an AI, ranking on page one of Google is no longer the whole story. Businesses need to know whether AI assistants recommend them, and what those assistants say about them.

2. Do not build your future on one rented platform

Even the largest technology companies are changing their products, prices and priorities at speed to keep up. If your business runs its AI inside someone else’s platform, every one of those changes lands on you. Owning your AI, on your own hardware, keeps you in control of cost, access and direction.

3. Your data is the real asset

Public AI tools work best when you share more with them. For any business that holds client, financial or personal data, that is the wrong way round. Private AI lets your team use AI fully, without your data leaving the business.

4. Get ready before you go fast

AI speeds up everything, including weaknesses. Before connecting AI to your systems, make sure the basics are right: security controls, access permissions and clear approvals for anything that matters.
