Your public IP address is the address the internet sees when your network connects out. It is assigned by your broadband provider and shared by every device behind your router, which is why it differs from the private address on your computer, such as 192.168.x.x.
Most business and home broadband gives you a dynamic IP address that can change when the router restarts. If you need a fixed address for remote access, VPNs or email servers, ask your provider for a static IP.
